Fee: $150

Join Master Potter Jerardo Tena Sandoval to learn the pottery techniques of Juan Mata Ortiz, Mexico.

Internationally recognized for their pottery, the potters of Mata Ortiz have revived the ancient art of the Paquimé people, a civilization that flourished in the area 600-800 years ago. As if guided by the spirit of the Paquimé Indians, a struggling pueblo has become a community of fine ceramic artists renowned the world over.

On the first day you will learn handbuilding techniques to create your own Mata Ortiz animal. On the second day you will learn how to sand and burnish a pot or “olla” made by Jerardo and his wife. Time permitting, you will even create your very own paint brush made from human hair.
Don’t miss out on this very special class and an opportunity to learn from one of the leaders of the Mata Ortiz phenomenon.

(Small pots and clay provided; Please bring your lunch)

Team Building

Looking for a great Team Building event 10 minutes outside of San Francisco, just north of the Golden Gate Bridge?

Working with clay is relaxing and provides a break from a busy office environment.  Our studio offers playful projects that get members’ creativity flowing.  The best part – the space allows team members to develop personal relationships that will transfer back at the office when working toward shared goals.  It’s a win-win.

All corporate Team Building events are 2-hour lessons.

Fee: $50 per person and a minimum of 6 people. Please contact us to schedule your event, a deposit is required to reserve your time.

Select from the lesson options below:

Any new skill takes time to perfect. These projects are meant to help you unleash your creativity and get your hands a little dirty. Try to have fun and enjoy yourself!

Textured Boxes:
Create a slab vessel from scratch. We’ll demonstrate how to make a closed slab box, but you can choose to leave your box open or make a cup with a handle instead. The project allows students to use our supply of lace, fabric, rubber texture mats and stamps to decorate and customize the clay slabs before creating the vessel of their choice. Students will have the opportunity to choose a glaze, MVPS will trim, glaze and fire pieces to be ready for pickup in 2 weeks.

Lesson on the Wheel:

Try your hand on the potter’s wheel. Get your hands in clay and enjoy the process with your team! The Wheel Lesson will include a short demonstration by the instructor followed by time to try it on your own with hands-on help if needed. Each student is expected to finish with up to 2 pieces. Students will have the opportunity to choose a glaze, MVPS will trim, glaze and fire pieces to be ready for pickup in 2 weeks.

Collaborative Pottery (musical chairs):
Looking for a TRUE Team Building Project? This departure from a traditional pottery lesson means that every hand-built piece will be touched & altered by every person present. With a game of musical chairs each student will rotate around the table and put their own personal touch on each other’s piece. This could mean adding height or shape, adding a handle or texture. Students will have the opportunity to choose a glaze, MVPS will trim, glaze and fire pieces to be ready for pickup in 2 weeks.

Don’t look puzzled – We fit together:

With the Puzzle project the instructor will cut large interlocking puzzle pieces from a slab for each of your team members. Each student will have plenty of time to embellish their own personal puzzle piece with textures, carving, cut-outs, and slips (as long as the outer shape of the puzzle piece remains intact). You may choose to keep your individual pieces separate or you could display your intact puzzle and show off your work as a team. MVPS will clear glaze and fire pieces to be ready for pickup in 2 weeks.
