For students who are interested in beginner-intermediate wheel throwing techniques. Lucy will focus on teaching throwing basics such as centering and shaping work on the wheel for beginners, while also offering more challenging projects for more advanced students. Her lessons emphasize the importance of design for making functional pots. Intermediate students may work on composite pot making such as lids, spouts, handles, and/or matching sets.

With over 12 years of teaching experience, Lucy comes to pottery from a self taught background. Her approach to teaching is fact based and driven by a strong understanding the fundamentals of forms and materials. Her goal is to teach her students to think independently when problem solving an issue with their ceramic practice. Lucy strives to make her classes both enjoyable and challenging for all levels. Each week, Lucy will offer a group demonstration to the class such as throwing forms on the wheel, trimming, glazing, or other surface decoration techniques. Along with weekly demos, Lucy will work one on one with students to help them with their techniques and projects.

Muddy Mondays are for students of all skill levels. This class focuses on the fundamentals of throwing: clay preparation, throwing cylinders and bowls, attaching and altering forms, and decoration and glazing techniques. I focus most of my instruction on functional pottery, but I’m always happy to help students explore more decorative and sculptural forms and techniques. Students are encouraged to bring examples of work they're inspired by or called to imitate. I will also focus demo time and 1:1 instruction on other techniques or forms students are curious to learn more about, including: multi-part forms, throwing large, sgraffito, slip decoration, etc… I look forward to welcoming you to our community and helping you expand your capabilities in working with clay!

  4. Overview of surface design methods

  5. Basics of glazing including multiple methods for applying glaze

  6. Studio policies and basic best practices for working with clay

  7. Basic overview of clay bodies and stages of the pottery process

  8. Questions and exploration outside of the standard course curriculum are always welcome. If you see something you’d like to try, just bring an image and Serenity will do her best to walk you through how to achieve it including demos and process steps.

You can expect class to start with a 20-30 minute demo for the first 4 weeks. The rest of the class is open studio time and Serenity is available to offer hands on assistance or requested demos as needed..
